Fields of Athenry

Yes indeed, my music taste is evolving once more, due to friends' influences.
I'm now quite hooked on the very different sound of the Dropkick Murphys.
How can you *not* like a band that uses bagpipes while playing Celtic punk?!

One of my current favorite songs is "Fields of Athenry," an old Irish tune that the Murphys covered quite well. The lyrics are the original from the tune.

"By a lonely prison wall,
I heard a young girl calling
Michael, they have taken you away,
For you stole Trevelyan's corn,
So the young might see the morn.
Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay.

Low lie the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing, we had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry.

By a lonely prison wall,
I heard a young man calling
Nothing matters, Mary, when you're free
Against the famine and the Crown,
I rebelled, they cut me down.
Now you must raise our child with dignity.

Low lie the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing, we had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry.

By a lonely harbor wall,
she watched the last star falling
As that prison ship sailed out against the sky
Sure she'll wait and hope and pray,
for her love in Botany Bay
It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry.

It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry.

Low lie the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing, we had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry."

In other news...
Progress has been made on playing "Your Hand In Mine"
I can play it roughly through the middle of page 2. I had to modify the bass line because the way it was transposed did not consider the easier alternatives for piano players. (i.e. the left hand eighth notes that should be written with the stem up are written with the stem down in an annoyingly complicated series that should just be written as an arpeggio)
But part of being a musician is not simply being able to *play* the music, but adapting it to work for you.

I'm also finally going to study for my permit, as my laziness has obscured it for quite some time. I made a deal with Kiwi that I would study for no more than a week and then take the test, see how well my memory works.
I'm pretty confident in my abilities so no worries there. If my whorish ex-best friend could get her permit it ought to be a piece of cake for me.

There's a possibility that I'm going to the consignment shop in town to get rid of this ring and get myself some much-needed money. Well today I'm getting it appraised, not sure if I'm gonna sell it. I'm hoping for around $150 or so, though that standard may be a little high.

No pun intended.
